The fact that Lost has been released on Blu-Ray has sealed the deal for us. Yup we are caving in and picking up a 40 gig PS3. We were given a generous Amazon giftcard and decided to look into Blu-Ray players. We first thought it be best to buy a Blu-Ray drive for the computer and stream media via Media Center. Then we realized that we would not be able to get the full audio/video capabilities. Next we looked into standalone Blu-Ray players. The cheapest model we found has a bunch of serious issues which make it not worth the cash. The next model up was way too expensive. So the PS3 40 gig is what we settled on. A much cheaper alternative to a Blu-Ray player. Its quiet, fast, and runs cool. We get Spider-Man 3 (lame) plus another 5 dvds free! This will not be our “gaming machine” but we will probably pick up a few PS3 exclusives such as MGS4 or Tekken 6.
Stay away from the cheap PS3. It has ZERO PS2 backwards compatibility.
I know about the no backward compatibility issue. To me it doesn’t matter seeing that I have one of the small, thin Ps2’s in my entertainment system and an original Ps2 in our downstairs set up.
The 40 gig runs cool in comparison of the 80 gig and it is much quieter . It isn’t going to be a gaming machine as we love the 360. We’ll probably pick up a few exclusive titles and thats it. If it wasn’t for the amazon gift card we would never get a PS3.
